Learning about the states of matter gives children a new way to label objects in the world around them and it also provides one of their first introductions to chemistry. Because reading about solids, liquids, and gases for the first time may be confusing for some children, books should be chosen that are easy to read and provide examples. Opportunities to try experiments which accompany these new ideas should be included in a lesson about states of matter.
This post suggests books which satisfy the SOL for grade 2. A few of the books are easy reads which provide a friendly introduction to the idea of different types of matter by including lots of pictures, humor, and descriptions of everyday objects. Some encourage the type of thinking that is required for a student to determine a particular object's matter-type.
